Fool's Gold

Running time: 113 minutes
Certificate: 12A

Fools Gold stars Matthew McConaughey as Ben Finn Finnegan, a good-natured, surf bum-turned-treasure hunter who is obsessed with finding the legendary 18th century Queens Dowry -- 40 chests of exotic treasure that was lost at sea in 1715. In his quest, Finn has sunk everything he has, including his marriage to Tess Finnegan (Kate Hudson) and his more-rusty-than-trusty salvage boat, Booty Calls. Just as Tess has begun to rebuild her life, working aboard a mega-yacht owned by billionaire Nigel Honeycutt (Donald Sutherland), Finn discovers a vital clue to the treasure's whereabouts. Certain that his luck will change with the newfound information, Finn maneuvers himself aboard Nigel's yacht and, using his good-natured charm, convinces the tycoon and his Blackberry-wielding, celebutante daughter, Gemma (Alexis Dziena), to join him in the pursuit of the Spanish treasure. Against Tess' better judgment, the search rekindles her love of discovery. But they are not the only ones after the treasure. Finns mentor-turned-nemesis Moe Fitch (Ray Winstone) has also set out to claim the prize.

Doomsday

Running time: 108 minutes
Certificate: 18

In an apocalyptic vision of the future, authorities brutally quarantine Scotland as it succumbs to fear and chaos when a virus strikes. The literal walling-off works for three decades - until the dreaded Reaper virus violently resurfaces in London. An elite group of specialists, captained by Eden Sinclair (Rhona Mitra), is urgently dispatched into the still-quarantined country to retrieve a cure by any means necessary. Shut off from the rest of the world, the unit must battle through a landscape that has become a waking nightmare. Now, 27 years after the epidemic, groups of survivors are marauding through the streets of Glasgow and the virus has surfaced outside the wall. The British P.M., John Hatcher (Alexander Siddig), and his ruthless chief advisor, Michael Canaris (David O'Hara), have decided to send a covert team into Scotland to search for a cure. On the recommendation of Chief of Police Bill Nelson (Bob Hoskins), Eden is a no-nonsense cop who was evacuated from Scotland as a child. She is told to seek out a scientist named Kane (Malcolm McDowell), who is the most likely survivor to possess the cure. Once within the containment zone, however, she finds that such a task will not be easily accomplished. There are two barbaric factions at war - one led by Kane and the other by his son, Sol (Craig Conway) - and both want Sinclair and her compatriots dead.

Running time: 108 minutes
Certificate: 15

November 1993. Elijah Wood ("Lord of the Rings") plays Martin, an American student at Oxford University - a big fish out of water in a strange pond. Martin knows one thing for sure though, he wants Arthur Seldom (John Hurt) as his thesis director. Seldom has a brilliant mind and is considered one of the leading lights in logical thinking.

In a public lecture, Seldom quotes Wittgenstein's Tractatus to deny the possibility of truth. Martin contests by asserting his faith in the mathematics under reality. Later, Martin and Seldom coincide and attempt to reconcile their apparent differences. This impromptu meet however leads both men to discover Martin's landlady (also a friend of Seldom's) brutally murdered. Seldom declares to the police that he had received a note with his friend's address marked as "the first of a series". As Seldom is an authority on logical series, he suspects that a serial murderer is defying his intelligence - murdering his friends one-by-one in an apparent attack on the professor. Martin, Seldom and Lorna (Leonor Watling), a Spanish nurse, will try to guess the following terms of the series as the murders continue.

21

Running time: 122 minutes
Certificate: 12A

"21" is a fact based story about six M.I.T. students who were trained to become experts in card counting and subsequently took Las Vegas casinos for millions in winnings. Ben Campbell (Jim Sturgess) is a shy, brilliant M.I.T. student who - needing to pay school tuition - finds the answers in the cards. He is recruited to join a group of the school's most gifted students that heads to Vegas every weekend armed with fake identities and the know-how to turn the odds at blackjack in their favor. With unorthodox math professor and stats genius Micky Rosa (Kevin Spacey) leading the way, they've cracked the code. By counting cards and employing an intricate system of signals, the team can beat the casinos big time. Seduced by the money, the Vegas lifestyle, and by his smart and sexy teammate, Jill Taylor (Kate Bosworth), Ben begins to push the limits. Though counting cards isn't illegal, the stakes are high, and the challenge becomes not only keeping the numbers straight, but staying one step ahead of the casinos' menacing enforcer: Cole Williams (Laurence Fishburne). The script of "21," written by Peter Steinfeld("Be Cool") and Allan Loeb("Things We Lost in the Fire"), is adapted from Ben Mezrich's book, "Bringing Down the House: The Inside Story of Six M.I.T. Students Who Took Vegas For Millions."

Caramel

Running time: 95 minutes
Certificate: PG

Most of the action takes place in and around a Beirut beauty parlor where three of the five principal characters work. Layale (writer/director Labaki) is a young woman who's carrying on an affair with a married man. She dreams of romantic getaways with him; he tries to balance his quick assignations with her and his devotion to his wife and daughter. Nisrine (Yasmine Elmasri) is engaged to be married to her stubborn, old-fashioned beau. But a problem looms as the wedding approaches - she's not a virgin, and that will not go over well with her alpha-male husband-to-be. Rima (Joanna Moukarzel) shows no interest in men but is infatuated with a female customer (Fatmed Safa). Their "courtship" consists of washings and cuttings and nothing more. Rose (Sihame Haddad), the aunt of one of the salon workers (although this title may be an honorarium rather than the result of a blood relationship), owns a small sewing/tailor's business. She must juggle caring for the senile Lily (Aziza Semaan) and pursuing a romance with a dapper customer. Finally, Jamale (Gisele Aouad), a beauty shop regular, is a would-be actress who spends her life pursuing the next screen test. Labaki lightly addresses problems of hypocrisy in both Christian and Muslim communities, with humour and humanity, emphasizing a common female bond beyond beauty treatments and the characters are often bathed in a golden light in keeping with the film's title.
